Google AI Overviews are cutting clicks. 7 changes small businesses should make to keep getting leads

AI summaries in Google are sending fewer clicks to websites. Here is what that means for small businesses and seven practical changes that protect your leads.

Quick answer

When Google shows an AI summary, people click fewer website links: a Pew Research Center study found clicks on traditional results fell from 15% to 8% of visits. Small businesses should respond by becoming the source those summaries rely on (clear, answer-first pages with consistent facts), by strengthening the places that still win the click or call (Google Business Profile, reviews, comparison and pricing pages), and by measuring enquiries rather than traffic alone.

If your website traffic from Google has flattened or dropped over the last year while your rankings look roughly the same, you are not imagining it. More searches now end with an AI-written answer at the top of the page, and fewer people scroll down and click.

That sounds alarming, but for most small businesses it is manageable. The people who still click tend to be closer to buying, and AI answers still need sources to draw from. This guide explains what is changing and the seven changes we would make first.

What the research actually shows

In July 2025, the Pew Research Center analysed the real browsing data of 900 US adults. About 58% of them saw at least one Google search with an AI summary in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was no summary. They clicked a link inside the summary itself in just 1% of visits.

Two lessons follow. First, informational searches ("what is", "how to", "how much does") are the most exposed, because the answer is often good enough on its own. Second, being cited inside the summary is useful for visibility and trust, but you should not count on it for clicks.

Google's own guidance on AI features is reassuring on one point: there are no special technical requirements. To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page has to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. The fundamentals of good SEO still apply.

1. Answer the question in the first two sentences

AI systems pull short, self-contained passages. If your service page opens with three paragraphs about your passion and history, there is nothing quotable near the top.

Change: start key pages and articles with a direct answer, then expand. "We build most five-page business websites in about four weeks" is quotable (as long as it is true for you). "Every project is unique" is not. Use question-style subheadings that match how customers actually ask.

2. Make your business facts identical everywhere

When an assistant describes local businesses, it pieces together what it finds across your website, your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Conflicting phone numbers, old addresses or different service lists make you a riskier source to mention.

Change: pick one version of your name, address, phone number, hours and service list, and update it everywhere: website footer, contact page, Google Business Profile, Facebook, LinkedIn and the directories you use. Add accurate LocalBusiness or Organization structured data. Our guide to structured data for small business websites shows how.

3. Shift effort towards the searches AI cannot finish

AI summaries are good at explaining. They are much weaker at helping someone choose a specific provider, compare real options or get a quote. Those are the searches that bring leads.

Change: invest in pages that help people decide: service pages per city or area, honest comparison pages ("agency vs freelancer vs in-house"), pricing guides with real ranges, process pages and case studies built on real results. These are the pages people still click, and they convert.

4. Treat your Google Business Profile as your second homepage

For local searches, the map pack and Business Profile often sit beside or below the AI answer, and they win the call or the direction request directly, without a website visit.

Change: keep your profile complete and active: correct category, services, photos, posts and, above all, a steady flow of recent reviews with replies. If you are in Jodhpur, our Google Maps guide for Jodhpur businesses is a step-by-step plan.

5. Show real experience, not generic content

Google's guidance on helpful, people-first content asks whether content demonstrates first-hand experience and expertise. Generic articles written to fill a keyword list are exactly what AI summaries make redundant.

Change: add what only you know: photos of your own work, the questions customers really ask you, mistakes you see clients make, local details and honest opinions. Put a named author or team on articles and keep an up-to-date about page. If you use AI to help write, our guide on AI-assisted content that stays useful and original explains how to keep quality high.

6. Make sure AI crawlers and search engines can read your site

Some sites accidentally block crawlers through robots.txt rules, security plugins or a firewall setting, or hide important text inside images and scripts.

Change: check your robots.txt, confirm key pages are indexed in Google Search Console, keep important text as real HTML text, and make sure pages load quickly. If you want AI assistants such as ChatGPT search to be able to find your pages, do not block their search crawlers. Our practical GEO guide covers the details.

7. Measure enquiries, not just sessions

If you judge SEO only by traffic, AI summaries will make every report look worse, even when the business is getting the same or more enquiries.

Change: track the actions that matter: calls, form submissions, WhatsApp clicks, bookings and direction requests from your Business Profile. Tag links from your profile and social bios with UTM parameters, and note when enquiries mention that they "found you on Google" or "asked ChatGPT". Our GA4 setup guide for lead generation shows which events to track.

A quick checklist

  • Lead every important page with a direct, two-sentence answer.
  • Fix inconsistent business details across the web.
  • Build decision pages: services by area, comparisons, pricing ranges, process.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete and your reviews recent.
  • Add first-hand experience and a named author to articles.
  • Check robots.txt and indexing.
  • Report on enquiries, not just traffic.

Frequently asked questions

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results. They answer the question directly and list a few supporting links. Google's AI Mode is a more conversational version of the same idea.

Do AI Overviews hurt small business websites?

They reduce clicks on informational searches, according to Pew's research. Searches with clear buying or local intent, such as "plumber near me" or "website development company Jodhpur", still lead people to business profiles and websites, especially when those are complete and trustworthy.

Can I opt my site out of AI Overviews?

Google's AI features follow the same controls as regular snippets, so limiting snippets would also limit how you appear in normal results. For most small businesses that trade-off is not worth it; it is better to make your pages the clearest source.

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization is the work of making your business easy for AI answer engines to find, understand and cite. It builds on SEO: crawlable pages, clear answers, consistent facts and genuine reputation.

How long does it take to see results?

Fixing business details and page openings can be done in a week or two. Search engines and AI tools then need to recrawl your pages, so expect changes in visibility over the following weeks to months, and track enquiries throughout.
